The Ukrainian government has run over 8,600 facial recognition scans on dead and captured Russian soldiers since the war began.
The operation has been carried out by the country’s IT Army, which is consisted of “a volunteer force of hackers and activists that takes its direction from the Ukrainian government.”
The Washington Post reported:
“The country’s IT Army, a volunteer force of hackers and activists that takes its direction from the Ukrainian government, says it has used those identifications to inform the families of the deaths of 582 Russians, including by sending them photos of the abandoned corpses.
The Ukrainians champion the use of face-scanning software from the U.S. tech firm Clearview AI as a brutal but effective way to stir up dissent inside Russia, discourage other fighters and hasten an end to a devastating war.”
But some military and technology analysts worry that the strategy could backfire, inflaming anger over a shock campaign directed at mothers who may be thousands of miles from the drivers of the Kremlin’s war machine.”
This modern technology in the USA has been used in federal and local law enforcement investigations. As Washington Post presents, this tool of recognition is used in a very special way. First, the employees compare the photos of suspects, witnesses, etc., just to see if they match anyone from their Clearview database. It includes over 20 billion images from the internet.
Anyhow, this is a highly complex process, so everyone on the battlefield first needs a little training before using the mobile app that recognizes faces.
There are more than 349 officials across five government agencies of Ukraine that have access to this facial recognition US modern technology. But also, more people are joining and having this access to the mobile app.
According to Ton-That, everyone who is trained has access to the system 24/7, and it’s totally free.
As WP explained, the Ukraine soldiers are very impressed while using this mobile app, especially with the fact that when they are scanning the face of the Russian soldiers, besides the photo, on this app, are appearing the personal information about them, everything from family photos and social media posts, to details about personal life.
